BIOs
Daniel Mercer, Founder & President of Mercer Auction Services, LLC, has 18 years of hands-on experience in the auction industry. "Dan the Man," as many refer to him, has had the unique experience of learning the business from the bottom up. Throughout his career he has had the opportunity to learn from and work with both Hall of Fame auctioneers and some of the soon-to-be "Rock Stars" of the industry.
He has traveled coast to coast across the United States working and conducting business with individuals, small business owners, and corporate presidents. His communication skills and ability to adapt enable him to easily work with all people (well, most people) and create a marketplace for all. Most days, Dan will credit several key factors for his drive and guidance throughout his adult life. First, being a "Minnesota farm boy," and secondly, serving four years in the United States Marine Corps. Last but not least, he credits his family - children Taylor, Madison and Ben and especially his wife of 18 years, Teresa. He also has a couple of simple sayings he applies to most tasks. One is from his late father Donald Mercer: "Measure twice, cut once." The other he guesses came from the drill instructors while in the USMC: "Just put one foot in front of the other!"
Dan loves the art of the sale. He believes his firm understanding of the key components in the sales and auction process is his strongest asset: sales psychology, marketing, industry trends and technology, site and asset prep, best business practices, a large network of clients/customers and strong sense of customer service. People like doing business with people they like or are like. The ability to blend with the people and build relationships quickly is the pinnacle of sales. When you see Dan participating in business liquidations, a 4-H livestock sale, an antique auction, industry or agriculture equipment sales , benefit auctions, real estate auctions, etc., you'll be amazed at his natural ability connect with the people.
His favorite part of the auction has and will always be the smiles on people's faces. There are many reasons why someone may attend an auction, but the #1 reason - because it is fun! Conducting fair, friendly and professional auctions has always come easy to Dan. While growing up on a farm in rural Minnesota he participated in youth sports and acting and great organizations such as 4-H and FFA, creating a base of work habits, ethics and values second to none. Dan has admitted he sometimes thinks he is too honest. But his commitment to building long-term relationships one person at a time has always kept him on track.
Dan has accumulated much knowledge from life, people and business. He has felt both the extreme highs and lowest valleys from the same -- life, people and business. It is fairly ironic that Dan feels both his achievements and his setbacks propel him forward equally. But through it all, his passion and persistence, acknowledgments from clients, customers, friends, family and the simple smiles on people's faces are why Dan continues to love the auction industry and strives to be a better person today than he was yesterday.
